"Most video game people have read one book and seen one movie in their life, which is Lord of the Rings and Aliens or variations of that," Levine told MTV News, adding, "There's great things in that, but you need some variety." Got that here.
Makes me think of system shock and Marathon, two games with stories. Not kill monster, flip switch, get key, repeat. Don't get me wrong Doom was fun but pretty boring compared to Marathon 2.
It Also reminds me of something I read about video game designer back in the 70's. I remember one game creator said that the most important thing was that your game was unique, you did not want to do anything remotely like the other game designers were doing. Like anything else made for public consumption... sooner or later everything becomes a simple formula that everyone has for the same vanilla pudding pop... With a fancy new wrapper of course...
